Emission Reduction
Through District Heating Improvements
Participants
- Honeywell - an international company that manufactures and
installs control systems to improve efficiency in the industrial, commercial and
residential sectors
- MPEC - Cracow's district heat distribution company, also owns and operates local boiler
houses and networks
- ECKSA - operates Leg, Cracow's cogeneration plant that supplies the city's main district heating network
Project Activities
- Modernized local district heating system supplied by Balicka boiler
house
- installed/upgraded heat exchangers
- upgraded internal heating systems of users and installed thermostatic radiator valves
- installed SCADA system for network
- reduction in fuel use and electricity consumption
- Expanded Cracow's main district heating network
- replaced four boiler houses with group heat exchangers
- upgraded four existing heat exchanger substations and provided equipment for
85 new heat exchanger stations
- upgraded internal heating systems of users and installed thermostatic radiator valves (TRVs)
Emission Reductions
- particulates: 791 metric tons/year
- sulfur oxides: 626 metric tons/year
- nitrogen oxides: 138 metric tons/year
- carbon monoxide: 941 metric tons/year
Future

Advanced Particulate
Control
Participants
LSR Technologies, Inc. - based in Acton, Mass., LSR is a small
technology-based company specializing in the development of advanced pollution control
equipment
FEWE - The Polish Foundation for Energy Efficiency based in
Katowice, Poland
EcoInstal - Equipment manufacturing firm in Poznan, Poland
Project Activities
Introduction to the Polish market of LSR's Core Separator particulate
collector. The Core Separator has high capture efficiency and it's low cost, simplicity, and
reliability make it attractive to the Polish conditions.
Establish Core Separator capability in Poland (EcoInstal)
- marketing
- application engineering
- manufacturing
- installation
- testing
Emission Reductions
- particulates: 2775 metric tons/year
- EcoInstal has completed 37 Core Separator installations and 16
additional installations are in progress across Poland. Total coal consumption at these
installations is estimated at 557,000 metric tons per year. This exceeds annual coal
consumption in Cracow's
Low Emission Sources. Particulate reduction achieved by this project across Poland to date
exceeds by 2.5 times particulate emissions from all stoker-fired boilers in Cracow in
1991.
Future
EcoInstal is continuing to market and install Core Separators
in Poland and is expanding throughout Central Europe.
